Villa ai Giardinelli is on La Maddalena, the island that lends its name to the enchanting archipelago which was made a National Park in 1994. The archipelago is made up of 7 major islands (La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Spargi, Budelli, Santa Maria and Razzoli) and about 60 minor islands.
Internationally famous for its splendid beaches and the fantastic colour of its waters, it is characterised by fantastic natural setting. Apart from the island of La Maddalena, the agglomerate of Stagnali in Caprera and a few houses on Santa Maria, the archipelago is completely deserted, with landscape and environmental features of particular importance.
The 180 km of the archipelago’s coastline hosts some of the most famous and atmospheric beaches in the Mediterranean, including: the Spiaggia Rosa and Spiaggia del Cavaliere in Budelli, the Spiaggia del Relitto and Cala Coticciu, also known as Tahiti, in Caprera, as well as Cala Corsara and Cala Granara in Spargi.
The Spiaggia Rosa, (Pink Beach), symbol of the Park, was used by Michelangelo Antonioni in the film “Deserto Rosso” (Red Desert) for the extraordinary colour of its sand.
The archipelago also offers numerous attractions for those who wish to devote a little time to discovering its historical and cultural curiosities:
- it was the last home of the Hero of the Two Worlds, Giuseppe Garibaldi, who built the famous “White House” on Caprera, now open to the public as a museum;
- the forts of Caprera can be an interesting place for walks and excursions in the fantastic Mediterranean scrub that covers the island;
- the old town centre of La Maddalena, with the old harbour of Cala Gavetta, is a lively and pleasant place where all the amenities required by those staying on the island can be found. From here you can also enjoy a delightful walk after a day of sun and sea, perhaps participating in one of the numerous events organised in the summer.
Lastly, sports lovers and those who enjoy life outdoors, will have an abundance of choices: from sailing to motorboat trips, from underwater fishing to snorkelling, from walking to jogging, from hikes to cycling and mountain bike trips, from tennis to beach volley...
